Spherical Stone
Moeraki Boulders
Moeraki Boulders are massive spherical stones which was formed 60 millions years ago and locally knows as Boulder ,which are shattered on Koekohe beach near Moeraki on New Zealand’s Otago coast.
Boulders are the remains of eel baskets, kumaras, and calabashes that washed onto the shore after the wreck of Arai-te-uru, a large sailing canoe. The rocky shoals that extend out from Matakaea represent the petrified hull of the canoe, the Maori say, that it represents the body of the captain.
The effects of weathering have removed some of the outer layers, allowing the inner structure to be seen and breaking up some boulders.Although now protected by law, it is believed that many smaller boulders were removed from the beach prior to legislation.
The Boulders are a very popular spot for photographers and tourist who visit NewZeland. One of the most famous landmarks in the Waitaki, the Moeraki Boulders really are a must-visit location
